Mystery shopping is a market research tool used to evaluate the quality of a product or service. Mystery shoppers have to carry out such evaluations posing as regular customers in the assigned locations and get paid after successful completion of each assignment.

A mystery shopper could get the chance to have lunch or dinner at restaurants, have snacks at popular fast food joints, get facial therapies done, get car or bike servicing done, go for a quick eye check-up, enjoy few days stay at a posh hotel, and so on. Sometimes mystery shoppers might have to purchase products as instructed prior to the assignment. In such cases, companies ensure that they reimburse that amount along with the basic pay after the assignment is successfully submitted and approved. Like every other thing on the earth, mystery shopping too has a few downsides. The day of a mystery shopper can be too hectic if he has signed up with multiple mystery shopping companies. Time becomes a major constraint in such cases, as a mystery shopper would have to complete an assignment and create a flawless report on it within a given time and go on the next assignment. This way, he can hardly have a moment to spare. Again, performance matters a lot when it comes to surviving in this field for long. Companies give much priority to the mystery shopping reports and hence, mystery shoppers have to create detailed and easy-to-understand reports with accurate information and the correct use of grammar. In case if major mistakes are spotted, a report is sent back to the mystery shopper for rectification. If the mystery shopper fails to identify the mistake and rectify it, the report is not approved and therefore, companies do not pay for that assignment.
